An Ancient Pairing
To the ancient Maya, jade and Spondylus shell were the two most sacred materials in existence. Jade represented the earth, water, and the cycle of maize. Spondylus — harvested from the deep Pacific — represented the sea, rain, and fertility. The two appeared together in royal burials, ceremonial caches, and the regalia of kings. They were traded across vast networks spanning thousands of miles, always together, always paired.
This necklace carries that dialogue forward. The celadon jadeite and the flame-colored spiny oyster discs speak to each other across the strand — earth and ocean, ancient and alive. The pairing is not a design choice. It is a historical fact, expressed in stone and shell.
The Stone
Guatemalan blue jadeite from the Motagua Valley — the only significant jadeite source in the Americas. Celadon blue-green, the rarest color expression of this material. Type A: natural, untreated, and unenhanced. The color is entirely the earth's work.
The Shell
Natural spiny oyster (Spondylus princeps) shell discs in deep orange and amber. Harvested from the Pacific, worked into precise disc forms that mirror the jadeite beads. The color is entirely natural — no dye, no treatment. Spondylus was so prized in ancient Mesoamerica that it was used as currency alongside jade.
