Canadian Nephrite Jade Guide
Canadian Nephrite
The World’s Finest Jade
British Columbia nephrite is widely regarded as the highest quality nephrite jade on Earth. JADEscape sources directly from mine operators in BC — a stone our founder has carried a personal connection to since childhood.
What Is Nephrite Jade?
Nephrite is one of the two true jades — the other being jadeite. While jadeite is rarer and found primarily in Guatemala, nephrite has been revered for over 7,000 years across China, New Zealand, and the Indigenous cultures of North America.
Its interlocking fibrous crystal structure makes it one of the toughest natural stones on Earth — more resistant to fracture than steel. British Columbia nephrite is exceptional for its consistent deep green color, high translucency, and the quality of its polish.
British Columbia
Cassiar and Dease Lake regions produce the world’s most prized nephrite.
Exceptional Toughness
Tougher than jadeite — ideal for bangles and carved heirloom pieces.
7,000 Year History
Revered across Asia, Oceania, and the Americas for millennia.
100% Natural
No dyes, no polymer fills, no enhancements — ever.
The Colors of Canadian Nephrite
From deep forest to pale celadon — each shade shaped by the mineral chemistry of British Columbia’s ancient mountain ranges.
Imperial Green
Premium Most SoughtThe deepest, richest expression of Canadian nephrite — a saturated forest green with exceptional translucency and a mirror-like polish. Increasingly rare as the finest deposits are worked out, making each piece a genuine collector’s item.

Nephrite vs. Jadeite
Both are true jade. Both are extraordinary. But they are different stones with different properties, origins, and characters.
Nephrite
British Columbia, Canada
Hardness: 6.0–6.5 Mohs — tougher due to fibrous structure
Toughness: The toughest natural stone — more fracture-resistant than steel
Colors: Forest green, celadon, black, grey-green
Luster: Waxy to resinous — a warm, deep glow
Best for: Bangles, carvings, heirloom pieces
Jadeite
Motagua Valley, Guatemala
Hardness: 6.5–7.0 Mohs — harder than nephrite
Rarity: Found commercially only in Guatemala’s Motagua Valley
Colors: Traditional Green, Princesa Blue, Lilac, Black
Luster: Vitreous — brighter, glassier, catches light dramatically
Best for: Fine jewelry, collector pieces, rare color expressions
“Both are true jade. Both are extraordinary.”
At JADEscape, we source and work with both — because the full story of jade cannot be told without honoring every expression of this remarkable stone.
