Where Does Jade Come From? A World Tour of Jade Origins
Share
Jade has more than one home. Its story travels through mountain landscapes, workshops, and cultural traditions across the world. For someone discovering jade for the first time, that geography offers a wonderful starting point: not simply Which color do I like?, but Where did this stone begin?
At JADEscape, origin is central to how we think about jade. Our collections invite you to explore the stone through its provenance, its character, and the hands that shape it. This guide is your introduction to that world.
First, What Do We Mean by Jade?
The name jade encompasses two different materials: jadeite and nephrite. Both have long histories as carving stones and jewelry materials, but they are not the same mineral substance. Jadeite is a pyroxene mineral; nephrite is composed of tightly interlocking amphibole minerals.
Neither name alone tells you everything about a finished piece. Color, texture, translucency, treatment, craftsmanship, and documented origin all matter. Nor does a country name guarantee a particular color or quality. The most useful approach is to consider the individual stone alongside its story.
A collection’s origin is the beginning of the conversation, not the whole description of the stone.
Guatemala: A Personal Starting Point
Guatemala sits at the heart of JADEscape’s story, shaped by our family roots and our focus on Guatemalan jadeite. It is an invitation to discover jade beyond the familiar image of a single green stone, and to look closely at the individual character of each piece.
Our work connects sourcing with craftsmanship. We work directly with mine owners, operators, and carvers, participating in the journey from rough stone to finished work rather than approaching jade simply as a resale product.

Canada: Discovering Nephrite
Our Canadian connection brings another important material into the story: nephrite. For a newcomer, exploring Canadian jade alongside Guatemalan jadeite is a practical way to begin understanding the two materials grouped under the name jade.
Rather than deciding which is universally “better,” look at what draws you to a particular piece. Its form, finish, stone character, and provenance offer a more meaningful basis for choosing.

Kazakhstan: Another Jadeite Story
Kazakh jadeite introduces a Central Asian chapter to the journey. It also provides a useful reminder that jadeite is not defined by one country or one cultural tradition.
JADEscape works with local artisans in Kazakhstan as part of our broader sourcing and manufacturing relationships. Explore this collection with attention to the details of each listing, allowing the individual piece to tell its own story.

Explore Pakistan JadeNew Zealand: Pounamu and Place
Pounamu carries deep significance within Māori culture. Exploring it calls for more than an appreciation of appearance: respect for place, cultural context, and the maker’s explanation belongs in the conversation too.
When looking at a carved form, seek its specific story rather than assuming that every design has one universal meaning. Let the available provenance and maker information guide your understanding.

How to Choose Your Starting Point
You do not need to memorize a map to enjoy jade. Begin with an origin that interests you, then look for a piece whose shape and character you genuinely love. Read its material and treatment information, consider the craftsmanship, and ask questions when provenance needs clarification.
Remember that the source of the stone and the place where it was carved can be different. Both are valuable parts of the story. A thoughtful description should help you understand that journey rather than blur its stages together.
From Mine to Market
JADEscape brings together education, known origins, and handmade work through direct sourcing and participation in manufacturing. Whether you begin with Guatemalan jadeite, Canadian nephrite, or another collection, our invitation is the same: discover the stone, understand its journey, and choose something that speaks to you.
