Guatemalan Jadeite at the Tucson Gem Shows — Notes from the Field

Every winter, the desert city of Tucson transforms into the world's premier gathering place for gemstone enthusiasts, lapidaries, artisans, and collectors. For JADEscape, it is one of the most important events of the year — an opportunity to source directly, connect with our Guatemalan partners at YAX TUN Minerals, and introduce both retail and wholesale clients to natural Guatemalan jadeite in person. This is what we find on the showfloor, and why it matters.

Why Tucson for Jade?

The Tucson Gem & Mineral Show is not a single event — it is a constellation of shows spread across the city each January and February, drawing buyers and sellers from over 50 countries. For jade specifically, Tucson has become the most important venue in North America for viewing and acquiring Guatemalan jadeite outside of Guatemala itself. Our partners at YAX TUN Minerals bring material directly from the Motagua Valley — rough boulders, cut slabs, finished carvings, and wholesale jewelry — allowing buyers to evaluate quality, color, and translucency in person before committing.

There is no substitute for handling jade in person. Photographs compress the translucency that distinguishes fine jadeite from ordinary material. The vitreous luster of Imperial Green, the ethereal glow of blue jade held to light, the weight and density of a well-cut bangle — these qualities only reveal themselves in hand. Tucson is where serious buyers come to learn the difference.

"Guatemalan Jadeite connects us to ancient traditions while offering contemporary collectors a gemstone of exceptional quality and character."

The Guatemalan Jadeite Story

Guatemalan jadeite holds a distinguished place in both geological and cultural history. Prized by ancient Mesoamerican civilizations and rediscovered in the 1970s after centuries of mystery, this vibrant gemstone embodies a legacy of craftsmanship, spiritual significance, and natural beauty. Unlike nephrite jade, jadeite is rarer and more intensely colored, with Guatemalan sources producing some of the finest specimens in the world.

The Motagua River Valley — the only known jadeite source in the Americas — produces material in a range of colors unmatched by any other deposit: Imperial Green, Apple Green, Mayan Blue, Lavender, Black (Olmec Blue), and complex polychrome patterns. Each color is driven by specific trace elements within the stone's pyroxene crystal structure, making Guatemalan jadeite as geologically distinctive as it is culturally significant.
