The jade market has a problem that most sellers prefer not to discuss: a significant portion of what is sold as "jade" is not jade at all. Serpentine, aventurine, chrysoprase, prehnite, and glass are routinely sold as jade in tourist markets, online platforms, and even some retail jewelry stores. Among pieces that are genuinely jade, a further distinction must be made between natural, untreated material and jade that has been chemically altered to improve its appearance. For any buyer spending meaningful money on jade, authentication is not optional — it is the foundation of the purchase.


Step 1: Know What You're Looking For

Before testing, establish which material you expect the piece to be — jadeite or nephrite — and what treatment status the seller claims. These are different questions with different testing implications.

Step 2: Field Tests You Can Do Yourself

These tests require no equipment beyond what most people have at hand. They are useful for initial screening but cannot replace laboratory testing for significant purchases.

The Temperature Test

Real jade — both jadeite and nephrite — is a dense mineral that feels noticeably cool to the touch and warms slowly. Hold the piece in your palm for 30 seconds. Genuine jade will feel cool initially and take time to reach body temperature. Glass warms quickly. Plastic warms almost immediately and may feel slightly tacky. This test is not definitive but eliminates the most obvious fakes.

The Weight Test

Jade is dense. Jadeite has a specific gravity of approximately 3.2–3.4; nephrite approximately 2.9–3.1. Both feel heavier than they look compared to glass (2.5) or plastic (1.1–1.4). If a piece feels surprisingly light for its size, it is likely not jade. This test is most useful for larger pieces — small beads or thin slices are harder to assess by weight alone.

The Scratch Test (Use with Caution)

Jadeite has a Mohs hardness of 6.5–7; nephrite 6–6.5. A steel knife blade (hardness approximately 5.5) will not scratch genuine jade. Serpentine (hardness 3–4) and soapstone (hardness 1–2) will scratch easily. However, this test should only be performed on an inconspicuous area and only when the seller permits — it can damage the surface finish of genuine jade as well as fakes.

The Visual Inspection

Examine the piece under good light, ideally with a 10x loupe. Genuine jade — particularly jadeite — shows a characteristic "orange peel" surface texture under magnification: a slightly dimpled surface that results from the differential polishing of crystals of varying hardness. Glass shows a perfectly smooth, uniform surface. Plastic may show mold lines or bubbles. Dyed jade (Type C) often shows color concentrated in fractures and grain boundaries rather than distributed evenly through the crystal structure.

Step 3: Understanding Common Simulants

Step 4: Detecting Treatment in Real Jade

This is where field testing reaches its limits. Distinguishing Type A from Type B jadeite requires laboratory analysis — specifically infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), which detects the polymer resin used in Type B treatment. No field test reliably identifies polymer impregnation in a well-treated piece.

Visual Clues for Type B

While not definitive, certain visual characteristics suggest possible Type B treatment: an unusually high translucency for the color grade (polymer fills fractures and improves light transmission); a slightly waxy or "plastic" surface feel rather than the crisp vitreous luster of natural jadeite; color that appears slightly washed out or uneven under strong light; and surface crazing (fine surface cracks) in older treated pieces where the polymer has begun to degrade.

Visual Clues for Type C (Dyed)

Dyed jade often shows color concentrated along fractures and grain boundaries rather than distributed evenly through the crystal. Under a loupe, look for color that appears to pool in cracks or follow the stone's internal structure. The color may also appear slightly unnatural — too uniform, too saturated, or an unusual shade that doesn't match known natural color ranges for the material.

Red Flags: When to Walk Away

No documentation offered for a piece priced above $200–300. Reputable dealers of significant jade always have or can obtain laboratory certification.
"Certified jade" without a named laboratory. "Certified" means nothing without a specific issuing institution (GIA, GRS, Gübelin, etc.).
Unusually low price for the claimed quality. Imperial Green jadeite at $50 is not a bargain — it is a simulant or heavily treated material.
Seller cannot explain the difference between jadeite and nephrite. This is basic knowledge for any legitimate jade dealer.
"Natural jade" without specifying treatment status. Natural means it is genuinely jade — it does not mean untreated. Always ask specifically about Type A status.
Color that seems too perfect. Natural jade has variation. Perfectly uniform, intensely saturated color across an entire piece is a warning sign for treatment or simulation.


Step 5: Laboratory Certification

For any jade purchase above a few hundred dollars, laboratory certification from a recognized gemological institution is the only reliable authentication. The certificate will identify the material (jadeite or nephrite), confirm or deny treatment, and in some cases provide origin information.

What a Certificate Should Tell You

Origin (if requested): Geographic source consistent with Myanmar, Guatemala, Canada, etc.
Weight and dimensions of the specific piece
Laboratory name, report number, and date — verifiable on the lab's website
