Two Minerals, One Name

The word "jade" is a cultural umbrella that covers two distinct silicate minerals: jadeite and nephrite. Though they share a name and a long history of reverence across cultures, they are mineralogically unrelated.

Guatemalan Jadeite: Born of Ancient Tectonics

Guatemala is the only significant source of jadeite in the Western Hemisphere, and its geological story is extraordinary. Guatemalan jadeite formed millions of years ago along the Motagua Fault Zone — a tectonic boundary where the Caribbean and North American plates collide. The extreme pressure and relatively low temperatures of this subduction zone created the conditions necessary for jadeite to crystallize.

The result is a stone of remarkable color diversity. Guatemalan jadeite ranges from the deep, almost black tones of Jaguar jade to the apple-green of Manzano, the rich blue-green of Blue Green Ice, and the ethereal sky tones of Celestial Blue. Each color reflects subtle variations in iron, chromium, and manganese content within the stone.

The Maya civilization recognized this uniqueness millennia ago. To the ancient Maya, jade was more precious than gold — a stone of royalty, divinity, and life itself. That cultural weight is embedded in every piece of Guatemalan jadeite we carry.

Canadian Nephrite: Strength from the North

British Columbia is home to some of the world's finest nephrite deposits, particularly in the Cassiar and Fraser River regions. Canadian nephrite is distinguished by its exceptional toughness — a property that comes from its densely interlocked fibrous crystal structure, which makes it more resistant to fracture than almost any other natural stone.

Canadian nephrite tends toward deep, saturated greens — from forest tones to rich spinach greens — with a characteristic waxy to greasy luster that is immediately recognizable to experienced collectors. Unlike jadeite, nephrite rarely achieves the vivid translucency of fine imperial green, but its depth of color and tactile warmth are qualities that many collectors prize above all else.

How to Choose Between Them
